Halloween Time Fillers for Room Moms
Ok y’all, I have a confession.
There’s one room mom skill that I’m not very good at… time management. Last year, at our 2nd grade Halloween party, we had lots of fun playing games and eating snacks. But there was a big problem… We had about 20 minutes left over.
Unfortunately, I had (greatly) overestimated the amount of time the snack and games would take. I was missing one important thing: a time filler!
Apparently, time fillers, often called “busy work” by teachers, are essential for classrooms filled with active 7-year-olds. 😂
So, from now on, I will most definitely bring a time filler to class parties …just in case.

Halloween Class Party Time Filler: A Word Search!
Believe it or not, Halloween is right around the corner! And I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved word searches. Plus, I think I’m pretty darn good at them. I’m obviously very humble about it. 😎
A word search like this one is perfect for kids in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. All of the words are hidden vertically, horizontally and diagonally. None of the words are hidden backwards!
Students can seek and find the Halloween-themed words independently. My 8-year-old (3rd grader) took about 10-15 minutes to solve the word search. Older children may complete the puzzle more quickly.
What I love about time fillers like this one, is that the kids can bring them home if they don’t have time to finish them in the classroom. It’s an activity that can be done independently, or with a partner. I like to tell students to work together to complete the puzzle faster if I know we will run out of time soon!
Word Search Answer Key
Like I mentioned previously, I did have my 8-year-old daughter solve the crossword puzzle to see approximately how long it took her to finish. Here’s a photo of her completed word search you can use as an answer key. (I’ve added color to her answers to make them more visible):
I hope this Halloween word search helped you fill some time at your class party (or at home with your own kids!). The next holiday is right around the corner, check out this free printable Thanksgiving I Spy activity next!
Have a Happy Halloween!
